Apple Crumble

Hot, one dish desserts are perfect for winter. Warm the family with this traditional apple crumble, served straight from the oven to the table in an oven proof dish from the superb Kitchen Warehouse collection. This recipe blends the robust flavours of nuts and oats with sweet apples for a truly divine taste combination. Add smooth custard or a scoop of vanilla ice-cream to complete this family favourite.

Tip: Make your own caster sugar by processing normal sugar crystals in a mini-chopper or food processor.

Ingredients:

Filling

  • 5 medium sized Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and diced
  • ½ c caster sugar
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground cloves or 3 whole cloves (do not eat)

Crumble

  • 1½ c plain flour
  • ½ cup caster sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1c rolled oats
  • ½ c finely chopped hazelnuts and almonds (optional)
  • 225g butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Peel, core and dice the apples into 2cm cubes.
  3. Place apples, sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon in large bowl, mixing well to combine. Transfer to the ovenproof dish.
  4. Make crumble by adding flour, sugar, cinnamon, oats and butter into large bowl and mixing until just combined.
  5. Spoon crumble mixture over apple and place ovenproof dish on a large baking tray.
  6. Bake for 40 – 45 minutes until crumble is golden and apples soft.

Serve with vanilla ice-cream of hot custard.
