Whole Grain Bread and Crusty White Bread recipes

Everyone loves the smell, taste and texture of freshly cooked bread, which is why we are sharing these easy bread recipes to treat yourself with home made bread straight out of the oven. Make sure you have plenty of butter on hand to slather on the thick slices of delicious home baked bread while it is still hot.

Bread making tips:

  • Use plain bread flour (sometimes called Baker’s flour) for the high elasticity.
  • When kneading dough fold it towards you then using your palm, push down and forward. Turn dough a ¼ turn and repeat for 8 – 10 minutes until no longer sticky.
  • Use flour sparingly.
  • When proving bread (leaving to rise) use a bread form from Kitchen Warehouse for texture and shape.
  • Proving dough in the oven: Pre-heat to 50°C with a dish of hot water on bottom rack. Turn oven off, brush dough with oil or melted butter and cover with a cloth.
  • For a crispy crust use a terracotta bread form that absorbs excess moisture leaving a perfect crust.

Bread Equipment:


Crusty White Bread

  • 4c Baker’s flour
  • 1 ½ c water
  • 20g Instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • Extra oil or melted butter

Whole Grain Bread

  • 1½ c kibbled (cracked) wheat
  • 200ml boiling water
  • 3c Edmonds high grade flour
  • 2c Edmonds wholemeal flour
  • 3 Tbsp Edmonds Surebake yeast
  • 17g salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 35ml olive oil
  • Extra oil or melted butter

Place kibbled wheat in large bowl, pour in the boiling water and stir well. Rest for 30 minutes to cool, then follow instructions below.

Bread Equipment:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 50°C with a dish of hot water on bottom rack.
  2. In large bowl combine all ingredients until a dough is formed.
  3. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide dough into 4 even spheres and cover with a clean cloth. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  5. Lightly bringing dough back to its original size by punching out gases.
  6. Place bread in proving form or loaf tin.
  7. Turn oven off, brush dough with oil or melted butter and cover with a cloth. Place in oven until doubled in size.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes at 200°C or until the crust is golden brown.
