Apple Pie Recipe for Father’s Day

This apple pie recipe is the perfect homemade Father’s Day gift to make dad feel happy on his special day. Time to put your baking skills to good use and celebrate the occasion with this classic warm dessert! Make sure to serve it with ice cream or custard on top and have everyone ask for seconds.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 8 medium-sized Granny Smith apples
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup self-raising flour
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, plus 1 tbsp for greasing the pie dish
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry
  • ¼ cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven at 220C.
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples thinly and evenly. Use a mandoline to make the job easier and quicker.
  3. Mix sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Add the apples and stir to coat.
  4. Grease the pie plate well, including corners and sides. Line it with one sheet of puff pastry. Make sure that there is enough pastry around the edge of the dish for sealing.
  5. Spoon the apples into the bottom pastry then dot the top with small cubes of butter.
  6. Brush the edges of the pastry with milk then cover with the second puff pastry sheet. Use a fork to seal and press the edges together, or use your fingers to make decorative crimps.
  7. Cut slits (about 2.5cm long) on the centre, close together. These will allow steam to escape during baking, preventing fruit juices from boiling over and creating a soggy crust.
  8. Cover the edge of your pie with a 5cm strip of aluminium foil to prevent the pastry from browning too soon.
  9. Place at the centre of the oven and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the foil then bake the pie further for 15 minutes or until golden. Let the apple pie cool completely on a cooling rack before unmoulding or slicing.

Notes

  • To know when your apple pie filling is cooked through, check the slits you’ve made on top. Your filling should be slightly bubbling. You can also try inserting a small knife into the pie’s centre. The knife should easily go through the apples inside without much resistance.
  • While this apple pie recipe is delicious as is, it’s even better when served with a scoop of ice cream or this homemade custard recipe.
  • Make dad even happier and start your celebration with a hearty Father’s Day breakfast. These homemade sausages in the morning will surely be a welcome surprise.
