Kylie Ward, owner and founder of Perth-based The Homemade Kitchen, says the secret to cooking delicious meals is in using fresh, authentic ingredients prepared with love. In this article, Kylie shares two of her not-so-secret recipes featuring her award-winning handcrafted artisan butter made from the cream of happy cows. Artisan butter is simple, fresh, and delicious product that can be a great addition to your meal without complicating the flavours.

1. The best potato mash

Serve it with succulent steak, heavenly sausages, or enjoy solo. This classic all-time favourite smooth and buttery mashed potatoes make the perfect side dish to any meal.


  • 1 clove of fresh garlic, minced
  • 400g sweet potato, peeled and cubed
  • 600g potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 250ml The Homemade Kitchen buttermilk
  • Pinch of WA Salt Group Natural Lake Salt, to season
  • 50g to 100g The Homemade Kitchen butter


  1. Place raw garlic, sweet potatoes, and potatoes in a pot.
  2. Cover with buttermilk, place lid on, and allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Tip: Potatoes are cooked when falling apart to touch.
  3. Taste for seasoning and add salt if required.
  4. Remove from heat and add butter.
  5. Mash with hand masher or kitchen appliance of choice until smooth.
  6. Serve potato mash with your meat and veggies. Pile it on the plate and lick the pot! Nothing beats the taste, warmth, and cosiness.

Another tip: Add fresh chopped silverbeet at the end, cover and allow to wilt for about 5 minutes. Stir throughout potato mash before serving.

2. Dinner with The Homemade Kitchen

This is Kylie’s go-to pasta dish after a day of work. It’s simple, quick, and delicious pasta served with a gorgeous buttery sauce tossed through earthy mushrooms, cooked broccoli, and sweet sun-dried tomatoes.


  • 1 clove of fresh garlic, minced
  • ½ leek
  • 120g The Homemade Kitchen butter
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
  • 3 to 4 handfuls of fresh spinach
  • 2 tbsp (heaped) sun-dried tomato strips
  • 5 to 6 Swiss brown mushrooms, sliced (or strips of grilled chicken, optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste


  1. Cook pasta according to packet directions. Once cooked, set aside.
  2. Melt butter in with garlic and leeks over medium heat, allowing a foam to form on top.
  3. Wash and chop veggies and add to pan.
  4. Cook on medium heat for about five to seven minutes until spinach is wilted and veggies are perfectly cooked.
  5. Taste and adjust for seasoning.
  6. Toss reserved pasta through the veggies, ensuring the sauce is evenly stirred through.
  7. Serve with a sprinkling of your favourite hard cheese. Voila!
