This hearty traditional mince recipe is perfect for any day of the week.

Shepherd’s Pie is a traditional mince recipe that will fill those hungry tummies. Shepherd’s Pie was originally made with lamb mince while cottage pie used beef mince but the recipes are interchangeable. Tasty and satisfying, this is the perfect meal for cooking on a budget.

Tip: For creamy mashed potatoes use waxy, starchy potato varieties such as Dutch Cream, Golden Delight or Creme Gold.

Equipment:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 100g butter
  • 2 Tbsp sour cream
  • 500g mince
  • 1 tsp mixed herbs
  • Salt and pepper
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • ½ cup barbeque sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Worcester sauce
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 2 – 3 slices of tomato

Method:

Potatoes

  1. Peel and dice potatoes.
  2. Add to saucepan, cover with water and bring to boil.
  3. Salt water and boil for 20 minutes or until potatoes are soft.
  4. Drain potatoes in colander and return to pot.
  5. Add butter, milk and sour cream and mash until creamy.

Mince

  1. Heat oil in casserole dish (or saucepan) over element.
  2. Add mince and cook, stirring, until brown. Sprinkle with flour.
  3. Add salt, pepper, mixed herbs, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, Worcester sauce and beef stock and stir to combine.
  4. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Smooth mashed potatoes over mince.
  2. Sprinkle cheese so potatoes are well covered. Garnish with tomato slices.
  3. Place in heated oven and cook for 10 minutes or until cheese is crisp and golden.

Serve with freshly steamed broccoli, beans and carrots.
